The White Hole - installation by Sally Buchanan at the Fortezza Vecchia

The White Hole, installation by Sally Buchanan, at the Fortezza Vecchia until 30 September 2015The White Hole, installation by Sally Buchanan, at the Fortezza Vecchia until 30 September 2015British artist Sally Buchanan, who lives and works in London, took part in this year's Premio Combat (2015) the international contemporary art prize which has been held annually in Livorno since 2010. She was lucky enough to be selected as one of the finalists and therefore to have her installation - The White Hole - displayed with the works of other finalists in the Sculpture and Installation category at the Fortezza Vecchia in July. After the exhibition, Livorno's councillor for culture, Serafino Fasulo, invited Sally to keep the installation in the Fortezza for an extended period, and so the work is still there, on display in the depths of the fortress until the end of September.

The White Hole is a threaded installation which used over 10km of recycled linen thread and took 3 people over 120 hours to construct. It was erected on site to fit specifically to its surroundings. The installation uses a continuous loop of thread to test out the dynamics of the hypothetical phenomenon known as the White Hole. In Quantum Loop Theory, everything is connected, interdependent and interwoven.

The White Hole, detail, installation by Sally Buchanan, at the Fortezza Vecchia until 30 September 2015The White Hole, detail, installation by Sally Buchanan, at the Fortezza Vecchia until 30 September 2015As you walk through the underground passageway, the work comes as something of a surprise as it appears with its huge wooden frame in the dim surroundings. It sits like some gigantic insect's lair in a corner of the area known as Le Croci, a series of bays with a cross-vaulted ceiling in the South Gallery. As you follow the intricate thread with your eyes, you are drawn to the central hole and its dark background, and wonder what might lurk behind...
