Sir Peter Maxwell Davies present at the Livorno Music Festival

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, master class in composition at the Livorno Music Festival 2013Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, master class in composition at the Livorno Music Festival 2013The 3rd edition of the Livorno Music Festival begins on 25th August 2013, organised by the Amici della Musica di Livorno association headed by Andrea Farneti, with cellist Vittorio Ceccanti as artistic director.

For two weeks Livorno will host a total of 11 master classes held by musicians of international fame, including the eminent British composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, currently Master of the Queen's Music, who will be leading a master class in composition from 25th-31st August, assisted by conductor Christopher Austin. The course will culminate in a concert at 5pm on Saturday 31st August at the Istituto Mascagni music school during which the compositions written by students of the master class will be played by the E' Colpa Tua string quartet.

Other master classes include guitar led by French guitarist Roland Dyens, chamber music led by the Italian Quartetto Klimt, violin with Serbian violinist Dejan Bogdanovich, and a jazz workshop with three accomplished Italian jazz musicians Maurizio Giammarco, Mauro Grossi and Ares Tavolazzi.

These courses are open to music students and graduates of all ages from all over the world. They will be held at the Fortezza Vecchia and the Istituto Mascagni music school.

The most promising students will be awarded scholarships to the value of 2500 euros.

The Livorno Music Festival also presents a varied programme of concerts to be held in several different venues in Livorno, including the Church of San Ferdinando, the Church of Santa Caterina (both in the historic Venezia district of Livorno), the Grand Hotel Palazzo, the Sanctuary in Montenero, Livorno Aquarium, the Museum of Natural History of the Mediterranean (Villa Henderson), the Fortezza Vecchia, and the Mascagni music school. The concerts will be performed by teachers and students of the master classes and offer an excellent opportunity to hear the high musical standards set by the festival.
