A few days ago I received an email from Jennifer in New York asking me if I could help her to find out about the Perullo family who moved to Livorno from Naples in the early 1900s. She was doing some research for her daughter-in-law's grandmother, Giuseppina, who was born in Livorno and lived here during the Second World War, the only survivor of her family who all died during the war. She wanted to know more about this.

I was a little unsure about where to start, but I have a friend, Serena, with the same surname, and thought it might be worth asking her if she knew anything about her family's history and if this might be the same family. I was surprised and pleased when she said it was likely and that I should contact her relative, Alessandro, here in Livorno, whom she told me is an expert on the Perullo family history.

So I wrote to Alessandro and got an immediate and enthusiastic response - this was Giuseppina, his father's cousin, whom the family had lost touch with years ago and had been trying to trace!

Not only was Alessandro able to describe practically  the whole family tree, but he also knew what happened to Giuseppina's family: they were killed during the area bombing of the city in May 1943. What's more, his uncle Vincenzo, now 92 years of age, at the time doing military service, had had the sad task of trying to retrieve people from the rubble after the bombing and actually found one of Giuseppina's sisters, in Via San Carlo. The family members are buried in the Cimitero dei Lupi in Livorno.

Naturally, I was able to put Giuseppina and Alessandro, and the rest of the Perullo family back in contact, and was touched and pleased to be able to do so.
