5-2-2012 Green by name, green by nature!
Elisa Verde is only 22, but she has lots of determination, energy and ideas for her new project, Greenbike, a bicycle hire service in Livorno, which is due to open in April. The name of her company refers not only to the ecological aspect of bike-riding, but also to her surname which means 'green' in Italian!
Elisa won an EC grant for young entrepreneurs from the Provincia di Livorno and has since been busy putting everything in place to start her new bike rental business in April. She has the premises - in Scali del Corso, close to Livorno town hall and on the edge of the Venezia district -, 36 bikes, helmets, and locks, and her Greenbike website is currently under construction, so she is already well on her way to putting her plans into action.
Having always travelled around Livorno by bike, even when her friends had 'progressed' to mopeds, Elisa sees Livorno as an ideal city for getting around using pedal power as it's on the flat and not too big. Cycle paths are gradually increasing in number too.
Her idea is to offer a bike hire service that she has already seen run successfully in many other cities, especially in northern Europe.
To begin with, GreenBike will operate a straightforward bicycle hire service, where customers will be able to rent a bike for an hour, half a day or the whole day. Whole day rental will cost around 12 euros. She hopes that customers will book in advance using her Greenbike website.
In the future, when her business has become established, Elisa would also like to offer themed bike tours around Livorno, as well as refreshments at her shop.
