This morning the winners of the Livorno a Fuoco competition were announced. The competition, devised by the Fondazione d'Arte Trossi-Uberti and the Rotary Club Livorno, invited artists from all over Italy to design a mural for a wall space in Viale Nazario Sauro in Livorno.

Artists, or groups of a maximum of 3 artists, had to be under 35 years of age and the mural had to be 45m long in order to cover the perimeter wall of a skating rink at number 32 Viale Nazario Sauro, near the football stadium.

81 artists took part in the competition which was judged by Gianni Pozzi (contemporary art history teacher at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts), Paolo Ciriello (photographer), Alberto Salvadori (director of the contemporary art observatory of the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze), Antonietta Squillante (Livorno Film Commission), and Olimpia Vaccari (vice-president of the Rotary Club Livorno).

First prize was awarded to the mural entitled "Trionfo" ('triumph') by Andrea Montagnini and Cosimo Grandoli (from Volterra) who win the award of 1500. The mural depicts six popular and historic Livornese figures: from left to right - Cristiano Lucarelli (footballer), Pietro Mascagni (composer), Zeb (graffiti artist), Giovanni Fattori (19th-century artist), Carlo Azeglio Ciampi (former Prime Minister and President of Italy), and Amedeo Modigliani (20th-century artist).

Second prize went to "Dippy dippy" by Attilio Trovato (from Enna)
