Siberia will be one of twelve artists (selected from the original 648 entries) who will perform one song each during a live televised event next Friday. Six of them will be chosen to go through to the main Sanremo competition in February next year.

Siberia have been together since 2010. The four members - Matteo D'Angelo, Piero Laganà, Luca Mele and Eugenio Sournia - are all university students, and are distinguished not only by their original music, but also by the fact that they all have one non-Italian parent (from Peru, Belgium, France and UK). Up to now they have been performing regularly both locally and at venues outside Livorno, and earlier this year were signed by the independent record label Maciste Dischi which put the band forward for the Sanremo contest.

Although the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo is not well known abroad, it has been held annually since 1951 in the town of Sanremo in the region of Liguria and is closely followed on TV by a wide audience. It was the inspiration for the Eurovision Song Contest and has produced well-known success stories like Andrea Bocelli and Eros Ramazzotti, and many classic Italian songs including the international hit from 1958, "Il Blu dipinto di Blu" (Volare) by Domenico Modugno.

Next week's televised edition of the Sanremo Giovani selections can be seen on the national Rai Uno channel at 9.20pm. Outside Italy is should be available through this website (Friday 27th Nov)
